Atomic Werewolf- S/T Review

Even in the deepest bowels of horror movies there is always a semblance of what ultimately created that particular manifestation and gave it purpose. And like a predator who stalks its prey in the pale moon light the incarnation known as Atomic Werewolf is sprung onto the masses. The collaboration for this monumental creation has had many limbs attached to it but to name a few you would have Pat Henry (Swashbuckle), Joshua Hansen (Summers End), Paul Klein (Gotham Road), Kyle Smith and Carmen Ugaro (Johnny B. Morbid) and a handful of others.

To say that this project took some time to simmer is an understatement so much in fact that it started almost 5 years ago. And despite having heard the material from this debut and constantly spinning it on my ipod I did not have the luxury to share it with the masses. Like a true beast needing to be tamed it just was not ready to be released upon the world and thus the waiting game continued. Finally though it is time for the wolf to feast on the retched carcasses scattered among the planet.

While Atomic Werewolf possesses many different influences spanning all sorts of metal genres from its creators its quite clear they have one purpose and goal in mind, DEVASTATION. The fact that their debut is now out in 2020 means I can now add this grand design of an album to my best of list even though it feels like I should have been able to do this 2 years ago when first hearing the music. Not only does Atomic Werewolf please me as a werewolf (I mean it’s a cool name, come on!) fan but the music reflects and encompasses the ferocity, aggression, and brutality one might expect from such a creature.

Songs like Atomic Werewolf, Wolfmans Got Nards, American Werewolf in You, Meatier Shower, and Werewolf Dundee are some of my personal favorites.

Musically the band not only combines their massive talent but some clever and often hilarious lyrics very reminiscent of classic M.O.D. era material. Certainly there are hints of sound from all of the other projects these individuals have been and are involved with. At times you have a very punk vibe that you would hear in Gotham Road, or horrorcore from early Summers End, to the pirate metal found in Swashbuckle. This record has it all as its driving force with any given combination of arrangements and musical approach.

From beginning to end this record is attacking the senses with a massive assault on the ears and never lets up.  It may have taken a while to let this beast out of the cage but it is 100% worth the wait and I cannot gush enough about this record. Be sure to look out for Episode #62 for some tasty morsels from this magnificent record. The beast is on the prowl and the pack is assembling and even yours truly as the God of the Dead bows down to the mighty Atomic Werewolf. Yes ladies and gentlemen, the soundtrack to the apocalypse has arrived and the true infection of the populace is about to begin with full force.
