The Noob Exchange: Korpius- Shades of Black (2011)

Brutal, Blistering, Catastrophic, Annihilating.....

These things come to mind when listening to the new opus from Canada's death metal gods Korpius. Featuring a foursome that have a stimulating amount of chemistry and technicality Korpius delivers some high quality fist pumping death metal with a dash of thrash for good measure. Listening to their new opus "Shades of Black" you can envision the aggressiveness and energy the band puts into the music.

Although the band has been around for some years now it is the first time they have come across my desk and graced my ears. Having been no stranger to the wonderful world of Canadian metal in the form of Kataklysm, 3 Inches of Blood, and Cephalectomy it is quite obvious it wont be long before Korpius enters the discussion from the heavy metal faithful. As a avid longtime fan of the Polish death metal scene its nice to see a band like Korpius raising the bar and answering that call with a bombastic thud.

Korpius features guitarists Philippe D'Astous and Maxime Beriault, Felix Lampron-
Dandonneau as the bassist and Paul Cote-Berard on the skins. Philippe and Maxime also share the vocals in the band but above all that the band has already rumored to have established themselves as a fantastic live act, but on to the album. The new album features 9 songs in total and all are unrelentless pieces of blackened blast-beat brutality, technical elements, and melodic solos that shine on tracks such as "On the Edge", "Fury", "At the Point of Death", "Disillusion", and "The Final Charge".

Korpius doesnt fool around on this record, the come at you with a straight in your face attitude and musically skull-fuck you leaving you begging for more. The atmosphere and savagry that Korpius brings here is furious and suffocating with a sound that literally shreds the flesh from your bones. The musicianship and craftsmanship is tight and versatile with all the members contributing both in lyrical content and exceptional playing. The tempo is perfect and ensares the listener from the word go chugging along in the classic death metal vibe.

As we speak the band is finishing up working on their first video for "Awaking Terror" and should be out soon for the metal masses. Long story short, if you like your death metal done the right way with not oversaturation of wankery or unecessary breakdowns than go out and grab yourself a copy of "Shades of Black". I tell you now people, Korpius is here. And they've come to chew bubble gum and kick ass and they are all out of bubble gum.
